I am smack in the middle of an 8 month volunteer stint in rural Tanzania, near Arusha. "Asante" means "thank you" in Swahili, and I am grateful for any financial donations for my project. Food Water Shelter, the organization I am working with, is really quality. You can read more about the project in this blog post.
My blog is an eclectic mix of personal reflections, quotes, analyses of issues of power and exploitation, reviews of books, and a few snippets of photos from my life. It is all my rudimentary record of my humble experiences. Yet in all things, the common thread is that I try to ground all of my writing--and indeed the entirety of my life--in the contemplative and mystical tradition. I am grounded in the groundless.
The Subversive Mystic
This is an age that, by its very nature as a time of crisis, of revolution, of struggle, calls for the special searching and questioning which are the work of the monk in his meditation and prayer....the monk abandons the world only in order to listen more intently to the deepest and most neglected voices that proceed from its inner depth. - Thomas Merton
