A nice view of the fishing island, from across “the spit.” The spit is a bridge of gravel connecting the island to the mainland. During low tides, you can walk across the spit and be on the mainland of Kodiak island. During high tide, however, the spit is covered with water, boats and skiffs can pass over it. This picture is from low tide.

The Spit as metaphor: sometimes we are isolated, sometimes connected; the tide comes in and it goes out again. There’s probably even a haiku here if we worked on it a little.
