“America will never be a socialist country”

Per Fox News, President Trump dramatically vowed during his State of the Union address on Tuesday that “America will never be a socialist country,” in an apparent rebuke to self-described Democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders that drew loud cheers and a standing ovation from Republicans in the House chamber — as well as supportive applause from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Ocasio-Cortez had the perfect zinger of a response, as usual:

“I thought it was great. I think he’s scared.”

I think it’s great too. I was pretty stoked when I heard that Trump bashed socialism, with the eyes of the nation upon him. Having our tempestuous Tweeter in Chief condemn socialism in the State of the Union Address is the kind of exposure you just can’t buy, which is something that a promotional genius like Trump should be able to appreciate, which of course begs the question: Is Trump, himself, a Socialist? Is he using his plummeting popularity to drive people to socialism?

Sundry Socialist Notes

Change….It’s coming at a faster than I could have anticipated. This next generation of grass-roots minded progressives have made a mockery of “incremental change” and are pushing a progressive agenda that is taking over the Democrat Party as well as winning the hearts and minds of the American public… For example, it wasn’t all that long ago that I was amazed that centrist Democrats like Cory Booker and Kamala Harris had signed on to Medicare-for-All. I thought that was a big deal. Now it seems as though no self-respecting Democrat Presidential will be able to get their campaign off the ground without signing on to the Green New Deal. For more on that, see the below vid.

“America will never be a socialist country”

Reporting on the ground in Santa Cruz….At our monthly local Santa Cruz DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) organizing meeting, last Saturday, I counted over fifty activists. Two years ago, when I first started attending Santa Cruz DSA meetings, we’d be thrilled if there were a dozen people sitting in the circle…Growing pains? Surprisingly no. Quite the opposite in fact, a point brought home after the meeting when a DSA activist from South Bay chatted with us about the positives and the “Deltas,” — I’m not sure what that is, but I assume it is a substitute word for “negatives” or “cons.” He’s right though, we do have a great group…..On Saturday one important agenda item was the situation of our local homeless, especially given that it’s the cold and rainy winter season. Some of our members reported back on how they distributed supplies at the homeless camp…….Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is a democratic socialist, as well and has the activist mindset.

Grass roots political activism, a new breed of politician

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez…. Speaking of AOC, here’s a great clip on Ocasio-Cortez and the grass roots movement that she represents. It can be difficult to keep up with AOC and with the startling rate of change in the contemporary political landscape, but I felt like this vid is solid, on that count:

Time to P/party?…..After the Clinton snub of progressives at the 2016 Democrat Convention, we were debating whether it was at all possible to change things by transforming the Dems from within, or whether we needed a new people’s party. That debate seems to have been answered. Progressives seem to be winning the day in the Democrat Party, at least for now.

Or maybe not…..After AOC released the details of her Green New Deal, Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi threw some shade on the Green: “It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive. The green dream, or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it, right?”

So is Trump a socialist?…Probably not, but I like to think that he’s “socialist curious.” In any event, it’s great to get the national publicity via the State of the (dis)Union Address. (Thanks Donald, for that Trump bump!)

My primary writing project right now is a novel set in remote bush Alaska, of the magical realism genre wherein an earnest and independent young woman finds a mysterious radio belonging to her grandmother, a device that has paranormal bandwidth and a disturbing ability to mess with one's mental stability.
