Alaska or Bust

I was enjoying a nice drive, heading west on Highway 16 in central British Columbia, when a tire flew at me, loosed from a vehicle that was heading the opposite direction. My car is fucked but thankfully there were no injuries. If anyone has any advice on handling auto insurance claims while traveling abroad, I’d love to hear it.

Writer. In the summers, I live and work in the incredible state of Alaska, in the bush community of McCarthy, as the Executive Director of the Wrangell Mountain Center. When not in McCarthy, you'll typically find me in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, writing and working with local activists. My primary writing project right now is a novel set in remote bush Alaska, of the magical realism genre wherein an earnest and independent young woman finds a mysterious radio belonging to her grandmother, a device that has paranormal bandwidth and a disturbing ability to mess with one's mental stability.

  1. So sorry about your dear car! That must have been a scary near miss, glad you are not hurt. All I can do is to wish you good luck with sorting everything out.

      1. That’s very evolved of you! I take it you had a period of shouting/swearing/crying first?! How many days has/will this journey take you (with/without car disasters)?

        1. Yes, and with a few recurring bouts of shouting/swearing/crying. I still have two long days of driving before I get to AK. Heading to a mechanic, shortly, to see if the Fiat is still drivable despite the unseemly appearance.

I’m so sorry! What a weird freak accident my friend. Exactly NOT what a person wants when on a peaceful journey north. I’m glad you’re ok but geez louISE. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    1. Thank you. Yes, it was a wire lovely trip up to that point, but after a wheel rim blows at just the right time to spring loose a tire that takes just precisely the right bounces so that it crunches your harmless little Fiat, you start to wonder what other ill-fortunes that fate may have in store. I didn’t rest easy until I pulled into McCarthy.
